A type of pop music of the mid-1960s that
originated in the NW of England. It was also
known as the Liverpool sound or beat music in
the UK or the British Invasion in the US. The
beat groups characteristically had a simple,
guitar-dominated line-up, vocal harmonies and
catchy tunes. It was almost exclusively
performed by all-male groups, of whom the
most celebrated was the Beatles.
